At the beginning, your options are deliberately modest. Using a selection of common and core parts, you begin assembling your first Device. Hoppers collect materials, splitters redirect them and specialist components transform cubes from one colour or quantity into another. Arrange the cards carefully, load your machine and watch the complete process run from beginning to end. When the output matches an available order, you complete it and score the points.
The real excitement begins when a machine almost works.
Perhaps your Device creates too many yellow cubes, not enough red ones or leaves a valuable blue cube unused. Do you rebuild the whole system, add another processing stage or purchase a more sophisticated part? Each turn presents a fresh problem in planning, sequencing and efficiency. A clever adjustment can turn a wasteful prototype into a beautifully streamlined production line capable of completing several orders.
Success is not only about constructing the biggest machine. The best players study the available orders, recognise useful combinations and decide when their Device is ready to run. Building too quickly may produce the wrong output, while spending too long perfecting one design can allow another inventor to claim the order first. This balance between ambition, timing and practical efficiency keeps every game competitive and creates plenty of satisfying “that should work!” moments around the table.
Devices captures the rewarding feeling of programming without requiring a computer or any previous coding knowledge. Players create a sequence of instructions using physical cards and wooden cubes, then follow the results through each connected component. Cause and effect are always visible on the table, making it easy to understand what happened, identify a problem and improve the design. It encourages logical thinking, computational reasoning, experimentation and creative problem-solving through play.
That makes Devices equally at home at family game night, in a board game collection or in the classroom. Younger players can enjoy building colourful machines and discovering how their choices affect the result, while experienced gamers can chase greater efficiency, higher-value orders and smarter combinations. Every selection matters, but there is rarely only one solution. The available parts and competing customer orders continually create new puzzles, giving the game strong replayability.
Compact, tactile and highly interactive, Devices blends the accessibility of a card game with the satisfying construction and spatial thinking of a board game. It can be enjoyed competitively with friends and family, while solo play offers a rewarding personal engineering challenge. Whether you are introducing children to logical processes, looking for a distinctive STEM learning game or simply love clever tabletop strategy, Devices offers something genuinely original.
Build it. Run it. Improve it. Then discover whether your Device can deliver exactly what the customer ordered.
